Network of Hydrogen Fuel Stations in Belgium

The evolution of filling stations in Belgium has been significant over the last decades, especially with the introduction and expansion of Hydrogen Fuel Stations. This article provides an overview from the opening of the first hydrogen station to the forecast of new openings by 2025, including locations in the most important cities and a list of the largest operators.

Evolution since the First Hydrogen Station

The first hydrogen station in Belgium open to the public was opened in 2016 in the city of Zaventem, near Brussels. This station was developed by Air Liquide, a leading company in the industrial gases and related services sector. The Zaventem station marked an important milestone in the transition towards more sustainable mobility in Belgium.

Since 2016, Belgium has seen a steady growth in the number of Hydrogen Fuel Stations. In 2018, a second station was opened in Halle, also in the Brussels region. Subsequently, in 2020, additional stations were opened in Liège and in the West Flanders region. The company Hydrogenics, in collaboration with Colruyt Group, has been a key player in this expansion, working to increase the accessibility of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.

Current Projects and Forecasts for 2025

By 2024, Belgium has more than ten operational Hydrogen Fuel Stations, located in strategic areas to maximise their use. These stations are located in cities such as Antwerp, Ghent and Charleroi, in addition to the aforementioned Brussels and Liège. Each of these stations is equipped with advanced technology to ensure fast and safe recharging for hydrogen vehicles.

Forecasts for 2025 are promising, with several projects underway to significantly increase the number of Hydrogen Fuel Stations across the country. New stations are expected to open in cities such as Namur, Mons and Kortrijk, as well as in rural areas to improve national coverage. In addition, the total number of Hydrogen Fuel Stations is expected to reach 25, facilitating the use of hydrogen vehicles for both individuals and commercial fleets.
