HVO in Spain has not yet evolved, although there are some projects that propose a bright future for this fuel as a substitute for traditional diesel.

The most important project was declared by the company Repsol in 2020, announcing an investment of more than 180 million euros to create the first HVO production plant in the country. This plant will be located in Cartagena, Murcia, and will be operational in 2023

With a production of 250,000 tonnes per year, it will become the largest HVO production plant in Europe announced to date, although the evolution of this fuel is so rapid that other companies are planning plants with greater capacity

There are currently very few service stations in Spain offering HVO for public consumption, although the interest aroused is promoting installations all over the country.

News about stations with HVO in Spain

June 13, 2021. Repsol, Bilbobus and Alsa have launched the first pilot project in Spain that uses HVO, a fuel with zero net zero emissions. Over the next four months, 12 buses from the Bilbobus fleet, Bilbao's urban bus line, will run on advanced biofuels based on waste.

HVO is an advanced biofuel that meets the requirements of the European Union Renewable Energy Directive for certification as a sustainable fuel, and is considered a net zero emissions fuel. HVO also meets complies with all the technical requirements to guarantee its use in Bilbobus diesel vehicles without modifications. Bilbobus is operated by Alsa, the largest bus operator in Spain

The project will contribute to saving approximately 300 tons of CO2 emissions during the time of the pilot phase. Its objective is to demonstrate that advanced biofuels based on waste offer part of the solution to achieve the objectives of sustainability in road mobility, contributing to the diversification of the Spanish energy matrix. In this case, more than 100,000 liters of fuel to be used in the project will be supplied by the Repsol Technology Laboratory
