Range of New Cars with CNG in
CNG engines have been available for cars in a large number of models in recent years. Before the year 2000, in the passenger car sector, CNG vehicles were equipped from gasoline vehicles by installing the components to be able to use CNG in a mechanical workshop. Subsequently, automakers began to bring CNG vehicles to market using existing naturally aspirated gasoline engines with minor modifications. At present, CNG vehicles with electronic injection are at a similar technical level as gasoline vehicles when it comes to engine technology. Although part load performance is similar to gasoline vehicles, maximum engine power is slightly lower due to thermal limitations. However, especially in passenger cars, this effect is not really noticeable in reality.
The pollution from CNG vehicles is generally less than that from gasoline or diesel vehicles, especially when it comes to potential ozone formation and carcinogenic risks. In the passenger car segment, greenhouse gas emissions are approximately 20% lower than those of gasoline vehicles (15% lower than those of diesel vehicles) due to the lower carbon content per energy unit. The emissions are even lower in the case of using biogas, in which case they can be minimal.
Overall, CNG vehicles are a cost-effective solution for sustainable mobility, if methane-based renewables are used and the 1% market penetration barrier can be overcome. More and more countries and fleet operators are increasingly evaluating the use of CNG vehicles, which is why more and more brands offer cars with CNG from the factory
