New Zealand is considering introducing a sustainable biofuels mandate on 1 January 2023. The aim is to increase the use of lower carbon fuels in the transport sector. In June 2021, the Ministry of Enterprise and the Ministry of Transport published a consultation paper outlining the key objectives of a future sustainable biofuels mandate
This new regulation will include, for example, no blending limits for hydrogen-treated vegetable oil (HVO - renewable diesel) in diesel or biofuel.
In New Zealand the possibility to purchase HVO is only possible by filling up at filling stations but the sale is limited to blends with a percentage of HVO in diesel, and not as pure HVO or HVO100.
