In 2006, the Chinese State launched the high-tech "energy-saving and new energy vehicles" plan, and continued to firmly promote the development of CNG vehicles in more than 80 cities in 30 provinces and autonomous regions of the country. Natural gas vehicles in China entered a period of rapid development, making unprecedented achievements in the promotion and application of CNG vehicles and the construction of refueling stations. CNG vehicles and refueling stations in China are mainly concentrated near gas sources, such as Sichuan, Chongqing, Urumqi, Xi 'an and Lanzhou. The convenience of natural gas application and the relatively low price of gas are the main driving forces behind the rapid development of CNG vehicles.
The Chinese refuelling station market is dominated by state-owned companies represented by CNPC, Sinopec and CNOOC, which had a combined market share of about 52% in 2018, followed by private companies with a share of 45% and foreign companies with a share of less than 3%.
China also boasts the world's largest fleet of passenger vehicles running on compressed natural gas, with 7.32 million on the road in 2020
China currently has more than 9000 CNG refuelling stations open to the public.
